Congratulations!!!
Chris Brooks

"My Sea Fairy idea came to me when I fired a dried mushroom covered in slip.  It came out looking like a shell.  I had a baroque pearl but shaping, carving and fitting the tail was a challenge.  The wings are gold over silver.  I added the crown with "gold" beads to hold the wire for the hair.  Each strand was individually styled.  The sea is layers of resin and the beads are also a sea theme."

The pendant measures 2 1/2" x 2 1/4"

And it's even more beautiful in person.
Congratulations again Chris, on a wonderful piece!!

I'll have paper and pencils, clay and copper wire, and some other fun ways to explore model creation.  So bring your creativity and anything else you want to use to explore your design or bring just yourself and play with the tools/ toys on hand.

This is going to be a fun creative day!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

There is no limit, the more the merrier!!!  I'll just keep adding chairs.

Here are some great samples of ACT:

love the pocket on this one.
fabric all sewn down.  crazy!!
 hardware and wire.  soooo cool.
punches and language.  so simple, but so great.
hand painted background and leaf cutout wrapped in twine. love this.
torn paper and words with central image, so great.
...and some zentangle to round out the samples

So what do you need to bring?  Anything and everything!!  Bring any scrapbook supplies, found objects, paper, little toys, twigs, flowers...basically anything you can think of and we will explore together.

I will have a sewing machine and all the usual studio tools and toys for everyone to use and play with.  I will also be happy to share my stash of scrapbook goodies and found objects with anyone who attends.  I have a ton of stuff, so if you don't have anything, not to worry, I'm sure you will be able to play and have fun.

So come to the Exploratorium and play, explore and get your process started.  And if you're not sure if your going to participate in the challenge this year...come anyway and enjoy a day of creativity and community.

See you there!!

2014 Design Challenge - Exploring Your Process

2014 Design Challenge – Explore Your Process; or Racing Yourself

This year everyone will create his or her own personal “Design Challenge”.  There is a great marathon metaphor that goes here.  But you will only get that at the February meeting or if you call me, because I’m not a writer.

Your Design Challenge must contain at least one element, from each of the following categories:

Category One:  Inspiration
Pick at least one of the following:
A piece of music, a theme, or an image;
You must present this to the group on November 9th to go with your piece.

Category Two:  The Quest
Form a question about what you want to learn, feel, or explore this year, or ask yourself, how hard do you want to push yourself and in what ways?   Add that to your theme, song, and/or image and share that relationship with the group on November 9th.

Category Three:  The Technique(s)/ Medium(s)
Pick technique(s) or medium(s) that you want to use to help you explore your question and vision for your design challenge piece.  This will be shared at the meeting on November 9th.

Don’t panic! It’s fine if all of these change along the way, even after the deadlines; more on that below, of course it’s fine, we're artists, sometimes we have to wonder down the wrong path to get where we're going.

This years evaluation process will happen in three parts, instead of the usual one part. So here's the plan...

The evaluation process:
Part one – Deadlines
There will be three deadlines and two ways of meeting them.
1)    Deadline 1 – March 15th – Explore - Find your Challenge for this year.
a.     Way one to meet the deadline – attend “Exploratorium” March 8th at Paige’s Studio.  We will explore our own personal race together using ATC to create mini vision boards.  ATC are Artist Trading Cards, if you are unfamiliar hit the google machine.  We will not be using them in the traditional way, but hey, what can I say.  More details to follow as we get closer to the date.

b.     Way two to meet the deadline – submit your inspiration, quest, and technique(s) or medium(s) via email to paige@paigelitfin.com.

2)    Deadline 2 – June 14th  - Design - make the transition from words, ideas and images to the practical work of art you want to create this year.
a.     Way one to meet the deadline – attend “Design ” June 7th at Paige’s Studio.  We will begin to bring our visions into the practical world with clay, paper, wire and anything else we can find in the studio.  More details to follow as we get closer to this date.

b.     Way two to meet the deadline – Again via email.  If you can’t take a picture or scan your work I’m happy to live with the honor system, this year is about racing yourself.

3)    Deadline 3 – September 20th  - The Work - Setting aside time to make the challenge a priority…before the deadline or on the deadline, if that works for you.
a.     Way one to meet the deadline – attend “CreateSeptember 7th at Paige’s Studio.  We will bring our pieces, such as they are, and we will work.  This day will have less talk and more action.

b.     Way two to meet the deadline – you guested it, via email let Paige (me) know what day you set aside and made the challenge your priority.

Those are all the deadlines.  But don’t worry they are only part of the evaluation; this is just to help us all stay on track this year.

Part two of the evaluation will be a self-evaluation.  Don’t start worrying, I’m not sure the exact form this will take, yet, but it will be as painless as I can make it.  I’m also trying to figure out how to trick everyone into saying nice things about themselves.

Part three will be the group evaluation at the November 9th meeting.  This will be similar to the last two years, but with some minor variations.

Additional Important Deadline; October 12th Meeting.

You must bring your piece to this meeting along with a card that has your name and the materials used in the piece.

Good luck everyone, this is going to be a really great year.  WooHoo!!!!

October 12th Meeting - "Trash to Treasure"
Paige 10:12 PM 0 comments

Trash to Treasure is here!!!!  WooHoo!!!!!

Bring in your craft closet orphans (excess beads, unwanted stones, texture plates that failed to inspire, tools gathering dust and so on). Be prepared to swap, barter and sell them to other members of the group.  This is a great chance to clear out and share your crafting cast offs. Of course, it is always fun to add to your stash, so bring some small bills, or be prepared to barter.

If you have not been here for a “Trash to Treasure” you are in for a real treat.  This is a very fun meeting.
Also at the October meeting

2012 Design Challenge

2012 Design Challenge

In January 2012 the New Metal Artists of Los Angeles launched our first Design Challenge. We had no idea when we starting that this process would be such a powerful experience.

During the year we held extra workshops in “Freeing Your Artistic Voice” with Lora Hart. These workshops allowed us to share with each other; our goals as artists, our fears, and our greatest motivators. The workshops fostered a feeling of understanding and support that stayed with us all year.

We also held a Design Challenge play date. This day allowed participants to share their individuals hopes for their challenge piece(s), get ideas and feedback on those hopes or on actual pieces in process, and most importantly, to get some work done.

Then all the pieces were put in the hands of the New Metal Artists’ Photographer Marsha Thomas. It’s hard to imagine how this challenge would have worked without the help of Marsha. Her amazing work allowed each piece to speak for itself, look beautiful in its own unique way, and made this beautiful book possible. Thank you Marsha!

The New Metal Artists - 2012 Design Challenge was such a success in all ways; it was fun, we created the beautiful work in the pages of this book, but most importantly, we came together as artists and people in a very real and lasting way. Thank you to everyone who made pieces, supported the participants, voted and commented on the pieces, this was an unforgettable journey and I’m so glad to have taken it with this group.

All photographs taken by Marsha Thomas.
